At least 11 people have been killed following a reprisal attack by suspected bandits in Kankia Local Government Area.

The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, explaining that the incident occurred after security forces disrupted an earlier assault by the armed group.

According to him, intelligence reports revealed that a bandit leader, Mohammadu Fulani, had mobilised fighters and was moving toward key bridges in the area. A joint security team led by the local Divisional Police Officer intercepted the group, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Mu’azu stated that several bandits were neutralised during the operation, while eight motorcycles and stolen cattle were recovered, noting that the success was made possible by actionable intelligence from residents.

However, the attackers later regrouped and launched a fresh attack around midday on Gwalgoro Village in Gyaza/Kunduru Ward, where 11 civilians were killed in what authorities described as a retaliatory strike.

Condemning the incident as a “cowardly act,” the commissioner extended condolences to the families of the victims and praised security operatives for their swift response in foiling the initial attack. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies.
