Nearly 14 years after the gruesome killing of four University of Port Harcourt students, popularly known as the Aluu 4, reignited national outrage against jungle justice, another alleged mob lynching has thrown Nigeria into mourning following the death of a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as "Ibee."

The striking similarities between both incidents have renewed calls for tougher action against mob violence and strict enforcement of the rule of law.

The Aluu 4 case, which occurred on October 5, 2012, involved the brutal lynching and burning of four students, Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku, Chiadika Biringa and Tekena Elkanah, after they were falsely accused of theft in Aluu, Rivers State. The killings shocked the nation and led to convictions years later, becoming one of Nigeria's most notorious cases of jungle justice.

In a chilling reminder of that tragedy, Ibrahim Mbaya allegedly died after being assaulted by a mob over accusations that he stole a mobile phone in Jos, Plateau State.

Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, was described by friends as a chef, aspiring model and one of the contestants preparing for the Mr and Miss Glam Nigeria 2026 competition.

According to accounts obtained by Naijachronoscope, the deceased attended a social event on July 26 before deciding to spend the night at a friend's off-campus apartment in the Ring Road area of Jos North because it had become too late to return to his residence in Rayfield.

Trouble reportedly began the following morning when his host allegedly accused him of stealing an iPhone, insisting they were the only two occupants of the room.

Although Mbaya reportedly denied the allegation, eyewitnesses alleged that instead of reporting the matter to the police for investigation, several youths descended on him, beating him for hours with sticks, planks and other objects.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show the victim repeatedly pleading for his life while maintaining his innocence as those around him allegedly watched, recorded the assault and encouraged the attackers.

He was later taken unconscious to the Jos University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.

The Plateau State Police Command has since arrested three suspects in connection with the incident.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said officers received information at about 11:20 p.m. on July 26 from a Good Samaritan that some youths had brought an unconscious man to the Jos University Teaching Hospital under suspicious circumstances.

According to him, officers immediately responded to the hospital where Mbaya was identified and confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

His body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Alabo identified the arrested suspects as Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear and Nensemka Fwanji.

He disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects, Emmanuel Newyear, was allegedly captured in a viral video using a large wooden plank to assault the deceased and was further identified through photographs obtained by investigators.

According to the police spokesman, the suspects admitted that Mbaya was accused of stealing a mobile phone but allegedly chose to take the law into their own hands rather than report the matter to law enforcement authorities.

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Jos, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other persons said to have fled after the incident.

Police said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

As of the latest official information, police have not confirmed that the allegedly stolen phone has been recovered or that any evidence has established Mbaya's culpability.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the country, with many Nigerians drawing comparisons with the Aluu 4 killings and warning that little appears to have changed despite years of public campaigns against jungle justice.

Human rights advocates and legal experts have repeatedly maintained that allegations alone do not amount to proof of guilt and that every suspect is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence and due process.

The latest killing has also renewed calls for security agencies to identify and prosecute everyone involved in the assault, including individuals who allegedly participated directly in the attack.

Observers say the death of Ibrahim Mbaya underscores the persistent danger posed by mob justice in Nigeria, where accusations, sometimes later proven false, continue to result in irreversible loss of life before law enforcement agencies have the opportunity to investigate.

With investigations still ongoing, many Nigerians hope the case will serve as another watershed moment in the campaign against jungle justice and reinforce the message first amplified by the Aluu 4 tragedy, that no allegation, however serious, justifies taking the law into one's own hands.
