1. Last week, 20 medical students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos were abducted in Otukpo, Benue State. The students, who were on their way to Enugu State for a conference, have since been rescued, with the government accounting that no ransom was paid.

2. The Nigerian government has announced plans to engage an external auditor to audit the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s N2.7 trillion fuel subsidy claim.

3 A deadly clash, which erupted in Barkuta community, Beji district, Bosso local government area of Niger State, has claimed an unspecified number of persons.

4. One week after returning from a trip to France, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is preparing for a trip to the People’s Republic of China. According to Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the Chinese trip will take place in the first week of September.

5. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja on Tuesday said the military will not heed calls for overthrow of democratically elected government to satisfy some interests. Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State at the opening ceremony of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference, Lagbaja said the call for military takeover was majorly coming from young Nigerians who never experienced the era of Nigeria’s extensive military rule.

6. The Nigerian Navy has handed over 72 bags of Cannabis sativa, each weighing 40kg and four arrested suspects to the Marine Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA. This was contained in a statement issued by the Base Information Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS BEECROFT, Lt. Hussaini Ibrahim, on Tuesday, adding that the Navy handed over three Ghanaian and one Beninese.

7. The Federal Government has finally initiated plans to enlist the services of an external auditor to verify the N2.7tn fuel subsidy claim by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited against the government. The yet-to-be-named auditor will assist the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation in determining the real amount owed by the government.

8. The Federal Government and the states have raised N100bn for the procurement of prepaid electricity meters. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said this was under the Presidential Meter Initiative programme.

9. The Niger State Police Command said it has uncovered a large cache of explosive devices, including bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices buried in multiple locations in the state. Although investigation is going on to unravel the sources of the explosive devices, they are suspected to have been concealed by terrorists and bandits who have been wreaking havoc in several places.

The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended four persons for allegedly stealing a motorcycle worth N630,000 in the Imeruro area of Atan-Ijebu, Ijebu-North-East Local Government Area, and electrical installations, including cables and solar panels, in the Warewa area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

12. Residents of Chikaji community in Sabongari Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State have called on the state government to do proper channelisation of the community. This followed flooding that occurred from the early hours of Monday to mid-afternoon after a heavy rainfall.

13. The current Mpox outbreak in Nigeria has spread to 30 local government areas in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with 40 confirmed cases so far. A report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) also showed that there are so far a total of 802 suspected cases in 33 states of the Federation.

14. The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Nasarawa State government and security agencies from arresting farmers or interfering with their rights, pending the resolution of a legal dispute over the alleged forcible seizure of 10,000 hectares of farmland.

15. The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi has charged all Field Commanders to exhibit a high level of professionalism while carrying out their statutory duties.
