i State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has cautioned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could slide into political obscurity if it does not present former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview on Arise Television, Fayose described Obi as the party’s most valuable political asset, arguing that no other figure within the ADC currently possesses the appeal needed to command nationwide attention or electoral support.

He said Obi’s influence was clearly demonstrated during the 2023 general elections when his candidacy on the platform of the Labour Party significantly boosted the party’s fortunes, leading to unexpected victories in the House of Representatives despite its previously limited national reach.

According to Fayose, Obi’s popularity goes beyond party affiliation, stressing that he would attract strong support even if he contested on the platform of a relatively unknown party.

While clarifying that he was not forecasting the outcome of the 2027 presidential election, Fayose maintained that the ADC would be in a worse position if it failed to field Obi as its candidate.

He added that Obi remains the key to the party’s relevance in the upcoming election, warning that sidelining him would severely weaken the ADC’s political standing.

“Peter Obi is the life of ADC,” Fayose said. “I’m not saying there are no other people in the party, but most of them are politically spent. Obi is the traction, the meaning and the major factor in ADC today.

“When Obi joined the Labour Party, a party that was largely unknown, people won seats into the House of Representatives. That tells you the kind of influence he has.

“I’m not saying Obi will win or lose in 2027, but I’m convinced that if ADC fails to present him, the party’s situation will be worse than it is now.”
