More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Tinubu not to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential election.

The clerics made the call in a communique issued after a meeting in Kano, where they expressed concern over the state of the Nigerian economy and rising insecurity.

The meeting, tagged ‘An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections,’ focused on the administration’s performance and the forthcoming election.

The development comes shortly after two Islamic groups, the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) and the Qadiriyya Sufi sect, endorsed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for a second term.

The groups reportedly endorsed the duo during a visit by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council.

However, the clerics, under the aegis of Ko Da Naka… For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development and the AFAQ Educational Foundation, said they were dissatisfied with the government’s policies.

They argued that the removal of fuel subsidy, floating of the naira, increase in electricity tariffs and tax reforms had worsened economic hardship for Nigerians.

The clerics said the government had continued with policies they believed were increasing the burden on citizens instead of reviewing them to address their impact.

They also accused the government of prioritising revenue generation at a time when rising living costs and unemployment were affecting the well-being of Nigerians.

The communique stated that participants at the conference agreed that re-electing the Tinubu administration in 2027 would be inappropriate if the government failed to review what they described as harmful economic policies.
