Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Zulum said the decision marks a historic moment for Borno State and the North-East, noting that it is the first time an indigene of the region has risen to the office of Vice President and secured renomination for a possible second term.

The governor spoke with State House correspondents on Thursday after Tinubu presented Shettima with the official certificate confirming his nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The certificate was presented during a brief ceremony held at the President’s office in the State House, Abuja.

Speaking after the event, Zulum said he visited the President to express appreciation and seek approval for governors and other leaders from the North-East to pay him a thank-you visit.

“I’m here to appreciate President Tinubu for renominating one of our sons, Senator Kashim Shettima, as Vice President, and to seek his permission so that representatives of the entire North-East can come and pay him a thank-you visit. Fortunately, the President has granted the request,” he said.

Zulum disclosed that governors from the North-East would visit Tinubu next week to formally convey their appreciation.

He described Shettima’s renomination as a milestone for the region, recalling that a similar opportunity nearly came during the era of Babagana Kingibe but did not materialise.

“We have never had it like this. An attempt was made during Kingibe’s time, but unfortunately it did not happen. This is the first time our son has become the number two citizen of Nigeria, and we are very happy about it,” he added.

The governor also stressed that the vice-presidential position is not exclusive to Borno State but belongs to the entire Northern region, thanking leaders across the North for supporting Shettima’s emergence.
