“To serve Nigeria with all my strength… To defend her unity… And uphold her honour and glory…”

For generations, millions of Nigerians have recited these words in schools, public gatherings, and official ceremonies. We memorised them as children, often without fully understanding their weight. Yet perhaps no time in our nation’s history demands that we return to them more than now.

The National Pledge does not ask us to serve our tribe. It does not ask us to defend our religion, region or political party. It asks us to serve Nigeria.

That distinction is important.

As another election cycle gradually approaches, one question continues to surface across homes, campuses, markets and social media:

Do Nigerians vote based on ethnicity, or do they vote based on ideas?

It is an uncomfortable question because the honest answer is that we often do both. While many Nigerians genuinely assess candidates based on competence, experience and vision, ethnicity and religious identity still play a significant role in shaping electoral decisions. Political campaigns understand this reality and frequently exploit it.

But should they?

A democracy cannot mature if identity consistently outweighs ideology.

The strength of any democratic nation lies not in how loudly its citizens defend politicians from their own ethnic groups, but in how courageously they demand results from those they elect.

The roads we drive on do not recognise ethnicity.

Hospitals do not ask whether insecurity affects only one tribe.

Unemployment does not discriminate by language.

Inflation visits every household.

Poor electricity affects businesses in every state.

When governance fails, every Nigerian pays the price.

This is why elections should never become competitions between ethnic nationalities. They should be competitions between ideas. Between policies. Between records of performance. Between visions for national development.

Unfortunately, Nigeria has often allowed political conversations to drift away from substance. Campaigns become emotional rather than intellectual. Public debates become personalised instead of policy-driven. Citizens spend more time defending politicians than questioning them.

This weakens democracy.

When leaders know they will receive support simply because they share an ethnic or religious identity with voters, accountability becomes secondary. Public office begins to look like an entitlement rather than a responsibility.

Yet the National Pledge reminds us of something deeper.

“To do my best… To uphold her honour and glory…”

Doing our best as citizens means asking difficult questions before casting our votes.

What is this candidate’s plan for education?

How will they improve healthcare?

What is their strategy for creating jobs?

How will they address insecurity?

What have they achieved in previous positions of responsibility?

What principles guide their leadership?

These are the questions that strengthen democracy.

History offers many lessons. Nations that have built strong democratic institutions did not do so by eliminating diversity. They succeeded by ensuring that diversity never became more important than competence. Political leaders came to understand that elections are won by solving problems, not merely by appealing to identity.

Nigeria’s greatest strength has always been its diversity. More than 250 ethnic groups, hundreds of languages, multiple faiths and countless cultural traditions make this country unique. Diversity should be our competitive advantage, not our political weakness.

Citizens must rise above identity.

Political parties must rise above identity.

The media must rise above identity.

Our loyalty should first be to the ideals that unite us as Nigerians.

The final lines of the National Pledge are perhaps the most powerful:

“So help me God.”

Those words remind us that nation-building is not merely a political exercise. It is a moral responsibility.

A nation cannot progress when competence is sacrificed for sentiment.

A democracy cannot flourish when voters reward familiarity over capacity.

A country cannot reach its potential when elections become ethnic censuses instead of national conversations about development.

As another electoral season approaches, Nigerians have an opportunity to reshape the country’s democratic culture. Not by abandoning their identities, but by refusing to let those identities become the only basis for political decisions.
