Lagos, Nigeria — Honourable Mojisola Meranda has been sworn in as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, a groundbreaking achievement that marks a significant shift in gender representation in Nigerian politics.

Her emergence has been hailed as a victory for women’s political inclusion, with advocates calling it a step toward breaking systemic barriers that have long limited female leadership in governance.

At a press conference held Thursday in Ikeja, Honourable Fatima Mohammed, convener of Women for Good Governance in Lagos State, emphasized that Meranda’s rise to the speakership is not just symbolic but a sign of the nation’s evolving democratic landscape.

“For decades, women have played pivotal roles in shaping governance, policy, and community development, often working behind the scenes,” Mohammed stated. “Today, we celebrate a woman who has broken barriers, defied stereotypes, and risen to the pinnacle of legislative leadership in Lagos State. Right Honourable Meranda’s ascension to the speakership is a beacon of hope for young girls, women in politics, and every citizen who believes in the power of inclusivity, competence, and dedication to public service.”

Mohammed further underscored Meranda’s track record as a legislator committed to progressive policies, social welfare, and youth empowerment. She expressed confidence that under Meranda’s leadership, the Lagos State House of Assembly would prioritize people-centric legislation that fosters development and prosperity.

Public support for Meranda’s speakership has extended beyond Lagos. Mohammed noted that similar events celebrating her achievement were held in over 30 states, reinforcing a nationwide push for gender inclusivity in governance.

Similarly, Engineer Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, President of the Coalition of Professional Women in Politics, praised Meranda’s appointment, calling it a historic step toward greater female political representation.

“Honourable Meranda has made history as Lagos State’s first female Speaker, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in leadership,” Owolabi said. “Her presence in office symbolizes progress for Nigerian women striving for political inclusion.
