The death toll from the devastating floods that recently struck parts of Adamawa State has risen to 23, according to official reports. The floods, triggered by torrential rainfall over the weekend, wreaked havoc across communities in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas, leaving thousands displaced and many homes submerged.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, during a visit to the affected areas, confirmed the number of casualties and expressed deep concern over the rising impact of climate-induced disasters in the region. He described the flooding as “one of the most severe in recent times” and commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives.

According to emergency management officials, over 5,000 people have been displaced, with several homes, schools, and farmlands completely destroyed. Rescue and evacuation efforts are ongoing, spearheaded by the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), in collaboration with NEMA, the Nigerian Red Cross, and other security agencies.

Temporary shelters have been set up at Aliyu Mustafa College in Yola, where displaced residents are receiving food, clothing, and medical attention. Officials say 11 persons are still missing, and efforts to locate them are underway.

Governor Fintiri also announced the formation of a technical committee to assess the full scale of damage and recommend long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.

The recent floods in Adamawa add to the growing concerns over Nigeria’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Experts are urging the government to invest in more robust drainage systems, environmental education, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
