m has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after King Charles III invited him to form a government following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer.

Burnham was formally appointed on Monday after the King accepted Starmer's resignation during an audience at Buckingham Palace before asking the former Greater Manchester mayor and Labour leader to form a new government.

Before travelling to Buckingham Palace, Starmer delivered a farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street, saying his "work is done" as he reflected on his time in office and pledged his full support to his successor.

Highlighting his administration's achievements, Starmer said the UK had recorded economic growth, reduced NHS waiting times, lower immigration levels and improved national security.

"Our economy is stronger. Our public services are on the up, with the biggest fall in waiting times for 17 years. Children are being lifted out of poverty every single day. Immigration is down significantly. Our defence and security are on a far stronger footing and our international reputation is greatly enhanced," Starmer said.

He also expressed confidence in Britain's future, praising the resilience, compassion and determination of its people while urging citizens to continue believing in the country's potential.

Burnham arrived at Buckingham Palace alongside his wife, Marie-France van Heel, where King Charles III formally invited him to become the country's new prime minister.

The new Prime Minister is expected to deliver his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, where he will acknowledge becoming the UK's sixth prime minister in 10 years and outline his vision for a return to what he describes as "stable and responsible" politics.

Burnham is also expected to unveil his new Cabinet and announce his administration's first policy priorities.
