A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bashir Ahmad, has criticised a United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, over its claim that US President Donald Trump will not meet President Bola Tinubu during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The firm had stated on Monday that the meeting it claimed Tinubu had been seeking with Trump at the UNGA “will not happen.”

According to the firm, “key members of the Trump Administration have made it clear that President Trump is not going to meet privately with an alleged heroin trafficker.”

Reacting to the claim, Bashir described the statement as a political attack “dressed up as certainty.”

He argued that Tinubu remains the democratically elected President of Nigeria and that allegations against him should not be treated as established facts without credible evidence or due process.

“Serious accusations should be tested against credible evidence and due process, not presented as facts simply because they fit a particular political narrative,” Bashir said.

The APC chieftain also faulted the firm for predicting that Trump would refuse to meet Tinubu and that the Nigerian President would be embarrassed at the UNGA.

“It is equally irresponsible to declare, in advance, that President Donald Trump will refuse to meet President Tinubu or that the Nigerian President will be embarrassed at the United Nations,” he said.

Bashir maintained that unless the White House or relevant US diplomatic authorities officially confirm such a position, the claims should be regarded as speculation rather than fact.

“Unless the White House or the relevant diplomatic authorities make such a position official, these claims are nothing more than speculation presented as fact,” he added.
