Protesters are currently in the streets, calling for Abba Kabir Yusuf to be removed from his position as Kano Governor, despite the police’s repeated orders to the contrary.

Kano residents are currently staging protests in response to the Appeal Court’s dismissal of Governor Abba Yusuf.

The panel of the appeals court affirmed the September 20, 2023, dismissal of Yusuf by the tribunal presided over by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay two weeks ago.

Engineer Yusuf ran as a candidate for the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), and the election petition tribunal had already taken 853,939 of his 165,663 votes, claiming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not marked them.

Yusuf had rejected the tribunal verdict, which he described as “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice”, and headed to the appeal court, which also ruled in favour of his opponent.

Subsequently, Abba headed to the Appeal that, which on Friday also upheld Gawuna’s victory, but a copy of the judgment gave Abba the victory.

The conflicting judgment raised concerns and tensions in anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling coming up in December.

This has also led to the prohibition of all forms of protests for fear of disturbing the peaceful atmosphere so far.

However, on Monday, there were protests in different parts of the state before police dispersed them.

Two days after, the protesters returned to the streets, chanting in Hausa, “We will not accept it”; “We will not allow it”; “Kano belongs to Abba”; “Our mandate must be restored”; “Injustice exposed in CTC”; among others.

The Police have warned Kano residents to shun any plan for public procession or protest, especially with regards to the Appeal Court judgement.
