Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have neutralised three terrorist suicide bombers in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, thwarting a planned attack on civilians.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Thursday, January 1, 2026, by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer at the Headquarters of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI.

According to the statement, the operation was intelligence-driven and carried out along the Guduf–Pulka axis of Gwoza LGA, following credible information that the suspects were preparing to carry out suicide attacks on innocent residents.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully neutralised three terrorist suicide bombers through a deliberate, intelligence-led operation conducted along the Guduf–Pulka axis in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State,” the statement read.

The operation was executed through covert intelligence efforts in collaboration with local volunteer forces, enabling troops to track and eliminate the bombers before they could strike.

During the encounter, soldiers recovered suicide vests and other improvised explosive device (IED) materials in the possession of the terrorists. The troops also inflicted heavy casualties on the bombers’ escorts, forcing the surviving elements to flee into the Mandara Mountains under sustained military pressure.

In the course of further exploitation, four AK-47 rifles abandoned by the fleeing terrorists were recovered, while two motorcycles used by the insurgents were destroyed.

Preliminary intelligence assessments revealed that the neutralised suicide bombers were dispatched from the Mandara Mountains by the Ali Ngulde-led Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) faction of Boko Haram.

The statement added that troops of Operation HADIN KAI have intensified efforts to detect, track, and neutralise suicide bombers and other terrorist elements operating within the enclave, leveraging human intelligence, communication intercepts, and other intelligence-gathering tools.

The Theatre Command further noted that collaboration with other security agencies and community-based volunteer forces across Borno and Yobe states has been strengthened to prevent attacks on soft targets and safeguard lives.

Public enlightenment campaigns have also been intensified to encourage vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious movements or persons within communities.

“Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute and committed to sustaining offensive pressure on terrorist elements, degrading their operational capabilities, and ensuring the safety and security of the populace within the theatre of operations,” the statement concluded.
