The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike at three universities owned by the Lagos State Government over the alleged failure of the state government to address its demands.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The ASUU Joint Campus Group for the three institutions announced the strike in a statement on Tuesday following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31 without an agreement.

The union said a final warning issued on September 10 also failed to produce negotiations, while the September 13 deadline passed without any dialogue with the government.

ASUU is demanding the domestication and full implementation of relevant provisions of the December 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government across the three universities.

Its demands include the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The union said it took the decision “with a heavy heart”, acknowledging that the strike could disrupt the academic calendar and affect members of the university community.

It appealed to students to remain calm and law-abiding while efforts to resolve the dispute continue.

ASUU also expressed understanding for parents and guardians concerned about possible disruptions to their children’s education.

The union clarified that the strike was not directed at the management of the three universities, which it commended for efforts towards implementing the agreement.

It also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts to resolve the dispute.

ASUU said it had made several attempts to engage the Lagos State Government through dialogue but accused the government of failing to address the outstanding issues.

The union added that its national leadership had endorsed the industrial action and supported the decision to commence the strike.

ASUU said the strike would continue until the Lagos State Government engages with the union and signs, domesticates and fully implements the relevant provisions of the December 2025 agreement.

“The Union remains entirely committed to constructive dialogue and to the swift restoration of normal academic activities as soon as these outstanding issues are addressed,” it said.
