The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the Federal and State Governments to fully implement existing agreements and address lingering welfare issues or risk another round of industrial action.

The warning was issued at the end of the union’s four-day NEC meeting held in Yola, Adamawa State, and concluded on Monday.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as the poor implementation of the December 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.

He also decried unresolved issues, including the withheld three-and-a-half months salaries, unpaid promotion arrears, salary shortfalls linked to the IPPIS payment platform, unremitted third-party deductions, and outstanding arrears from the 25–35 percent wage award.

According to Piwuna, the growing frustration among university lecturers over government’s handling of their welfare could trigger a fresh wave of industrial unrest if urgent steps are not taken.

“The increasing frustration occasioned by the seeming government’s disinterestedness in the welfare of Nigerian academics is brewing a pent-up anger which could erupt into a new wave of industrial unrest if not addressed,” he stated.

The union appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders in the education sector to prevail on both federal and state governments to honour their commitments in order to protect the nation’s university system from further disruption.

ASUU, however, maintained that it remains open to dialogue with the government, while revealing that an emergency NEC meeting would soon be convened to review the situation and decide on the next line of action.
