Fresh moves are underway among Nigeria’s leading opposition figures to form a united front aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai are at the centre of discussions to build what insiders describe as a “mega opposition coalition.”

Atiku confirmed the development during a recent meeting with political allies in Abuja, describing the move as “a fast-moving train” and urging others to join what he called a campaign to rescue Nigeria’s democracy.

“We must come together to prevent the emergence of a one-party dictatorship. This coalition is about saving Nigeria, not personal ambition,” he said.

Though Peter Obi has not publicly confirmed his participation, sources within the Labour Party say conversations between him and Atiku have already begun. A formal structure is expected to emerge in the coming months.

Also linked to the talks is Nasir El-Rufai, a former APC chieftain who is reportedly exploring new political alignments outside the ruling party.

Supporters of the move argue that the opposition cannot afford to go into another election divided. Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour noted that the combined votes of Atiku and Obi in 2023 would have surpassed Tinubu’s tally.

“A united ticket in 2027 will be a game-changer,” he said.

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the coalition plans as politically unrealistic. Party spokesman Bala Ibrahim said simply adding up past votes doesn’t guarantee electoral victory.

“The Nigerian electorate is not static. What worked or didn’t work in 2023 cannot just be applied to 2027. The APC remains strong and confident in President Tinubu’s leadership,” he said.

Pro-Tinubu groups have also accused the opposition leaders of pursuing power for its own sake, warning that internal divisions may prevent the coalition from taking shape.

Analysts say while the talks show signs of momentum, the success of the alliance will depend on how well the opposition can manage internal egos, agree on a consensus candidate, and present a clear policy alternative.

For now, the political chessboard is being reset — and with just under two years to the next general elections, 2027 may be shaping up as one of Nigeria’s most competitive races in recent history.
