In recent times, Nigeria’s political and social space has seen the rise of several movements, most notably groups like the “City Boys” and similar formations across different regions. These movements often come with energy, visibility, and a promise of engagement, particularly for young people. They organize rallies, distribute items, and create a sense of belonging among supporters. On the surface, they appear to be a response to the growing need for inclusion and economic support.

However, beneath this activity lies a more fundamental question that many Nigerians are beginning to ask: why does governance increasingly revolve around movements, slogans, and periodic empowerment, rather than the consistent delivery of functional systems?

The reality of daily life in Nigeria today is marked by persistent structural challenges. Access to reliable electricity remains limited. Public education struggles with quality and infrastructure. Healthcare systems are overstretched. Roads deteriorate quickly, and insecurity continues to disrupt livelihoods, particularly in rural communities. These are not new problems, and they are not problems that can be solved through occasional interventions.

Empowerment programmes and palliatives, while helpful in moments of economic strain, are not substitutes for governance. They are temporary responses to deeper issues. When food items are distributed or small grants are given, they may provide short-term relief, but they do not address the conditions that created the need in the first place. In many cases, the same beneficiaries return to the same challenges once the intervention ends.

This pattern has created a cycle where citizens are repeatedly brought back to dependency on periodic support rather than being positioned within a system that enables sustainable growth. It raises concerns about whether such initiatives are designed as long-term solutions or as coping mechanisms within a system that is yet to fully function.

Movements like the “City Boys” may serve political or social purposes, including mobilization and awareness. They may also create opportunities for some individuals. However, the existence of such movements should not distract from the core responsibility of leadership, which is to build and maintain systems that work for everyone, not just for those who are reached through targeted programmes.

A functioning system reduces the need for repeated intervention. Where electricity is stable, businesses can grow independently. Where education is effective, young people acquire skills that allow them to compete and succeed without reliance on assistance. Where healthcare is accessible, citizens are less vulnerable to preventable crises. Where institutions are strong and transparent, opportunities become more evenly distributed.

These are the foundations of real empowerment.

The challenge, therefore, is not whether empowerment programmes should exist, but whether they have become a replacement for deeper, more difficult work. Governance requires long-term planning, policy consistency, institutional strengthening, and accountability. It requires a commitment to addressing root causes rather than managing symptoms.

Nigeria is not lacking in potential or human capacity. The country has demonstrated, both locally and through its diaspora, that its people can excel in environments where systems are functional. The issue is not whether Nigerians can succeed, but whether the structures within the country are designed to support that success.

At this stage in Nigeria’s development, the focus must shift from temporary relief to sustainable progress. This means prioritizing reforms in critical sectors such as power, education, healthcare, and security. It also means ensuring that public resources are managed with transparency and directed toward long-term impact rather than short-term visibility.

Movements and initiatives may continue to emerge, and they may play a role in political engagement. However, they should not become the center of governance. The true measure of leadership lies not in how many people are mobilized or how many items are distributed, but in how effectively systems are built and maintained over time.

Ultimately, Nigerians are not asking for occasional assistance. They are asking for a country that functions consistently, where opportunities are created through structure, not through intervention.

The question remains whether the current approach will evolve to meet that expectation, or whether the cycle of temporary solutions will continue in place of lasting change.
