Democracy was never designed to be a competition between ethnic groups. It was designed to be a contest of ideas, policies, competence, and vision. Yet, in many developing democracies, including Nigeria, elections often become battles of identity rather than debates about governance. The result is a political culture where who a candidate is sometimes matters more than what that candidate intends to do.

If Nigeria hopes to build a stronger democracy, voters must begin to ask different questions.

Not, “Where is this candidate from?”

But, “What has this candidate done?”

Not, “What language does this candidate speak?”

But, “What solutions does this candidate offer?”

This shift is essential because democracy thrives when citizens make informed choices based on issues that affect their daily lives: education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, employment, agriculture, justice, and economic opportunity.

Ethnicity is a reality in Nigeria. We are a nation blessed with hundreds of ethnic nationalities, cultures and languages. This diversity should be one of our greatest strengths. Unfortunately, politics has often transformed it into a tool for division. Campaigns sometimes appeal to ethnic loyalty instead of competence, while voters may feel obligated to support “their own” regardless of performance or capacity.

Such politics comes at a cost.

When elections become ethnic contests, accountability weakens. Leaders begin to believe that loyalty is guaranteed by identity rather than earned through performance. Citizens, in turn, may overlook poor governance simply because they share an ethnic, regional or religious bond with those in power. Democracy then loses one of its most important purposes: holding leaders accountable.

A mature democracy requires informed citizens. It requires people who read manifestos, question policies, compare records and evaluate promises against reality. Political debates should centre on how candidates intend to improve power supply, reduce unemployment, tackle insecurity, strengthen education, reform healthcare and create opportunities for young people. These are the issues that shape the future of a nation.

Around the world, countries that have built stable democracies did not do so overnight. They gradually developed political cultures where institutions became stronger than personalities and policies mattered more than identity. While no democracy is perfect, the common thread is that voters increasingly reward performance and punish failure.

Nigeria has the same opportunity.

The country’s young population, growing access to information and expanding civic engagement provide hope that future elections can become more issue-driven. Civil society organisations, the media, educational institutions and community leaders all have important roles to play in encouraging political literacy and informed participation.

Political parties also have responsibilities. Rather than relying on emotional appeals or identity politics, they should present clear policy alternatives, measurable programmes and transparent plans for implementation. Democracy becomes meaningful when citizens can compare ideas instead of merely comparing backgrounds.

Ultimately, the responsibility rests with every voter.

Every ballot is more than a vote for an individual; it is a vote for the kind of society we wish to build. If citizens consistently reward competence, integrity, accountability and vision, political parties will gradually adapt by presenting candidates who embody those qualities. If identity remains the primary basis for electoral decisions, politics will continue to reflect those incentives.

Nigeria’s diversity should unite rather than divide. Our ethnic identities are valuable parts of our heritage, but they should not replace critical thinking at the ballot box. Good governance does not belong to one tribe, one religion or one region. Competence has no ethnicity, and integrity speaks every Nigerian language.

The future of Nigerian democracy will not be determined solely by those who seek office. It will also be shaped by those who choose who occupies it.

A stronger democracy begins when citizens stop asking, “Who is one of us?” and start asking, “Who is best prepared to serve all of us?”
