The General Secretary of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Dr. Ayuba Asheshe, has insisted that there is overwhelming evidence to support claims of a targeted genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Jos, Dr. Asheshe expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity in the country, revealing that violence has led to the destruction of about 19,100 churches, the abduction of more than 600 clergymen, and the deaths of thousands of Christians nationwide.

According to him, documented records indicate that an average of 1,200 churches are destroyed each year—roughly 100 every month or about three daily, amounting to over 19,000 churches razed within a 16-year period. He further disclosed that over 600 clerics, including about 350 pastors and 250 Catholic priests, have been kidnapped across the country, with many losing their lives while in captivity.

Dr. Asheshe also cited data from Open Doors USA, which reportedly shows that Nigerians accounted for 82 percent of Christians killed globally between October 2022 and September 2023. He added that more than 3.5 million Christians have been displaced during this period, with their homes and places of worship reduced to rubble.

Referencing reports by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), the ECWA leader said Nigeria has witnessed sustained attacks on Christians over the past two decades, including within ECWA communities. He revealed that between 2023 and 2024 alone, 208 ECWA members were abducted, with several dying while in captivity.

Dr. Asheshe called on the government to intensify efforts to halt the persistent attacks, destruction of churches, and killings of Christians across the country. While acknowledging recent steps taken by the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s security framework, he noted that although the measures are still in their early stages, they represent a positive move toward safeguarding lives, ensuring justice, and rebuilding public confidence in the government’s ability to protect its citizens.
