Before glass towers, Nigeria had walls, courts, and memory.

There are no cranes. There is no traffic.

There is order. Old order.

Modern Nigeria sells progress as height.

The older Nigeria sold it as enclosure.

Kano’s Kofar Mata gates were not decorative. They were customs. You entered with goods, you paid in cowries, you left with news from Timbuktu.

Zaria’s walls held scholars and smiths. Inside, the Zazzau emirate ran a university before Oxford was famous.

Benin City had moats. Not for defense alone. For statement.

The Guinness Book called them the largest earthworks in the world. The British called them "too organized" and burned them in 1897.

Ile-Ife had groves. Sacred, quiet, and mapped by priests.

Oyo had a political system so complex it would give a constitutional lawyer a headache. The Alaafin, the Oyomesi, the Ogboni. Checks and balances in agbada.

These were not villages that grew.

They were capitals that decided to stay.

Status in 14th century Kano was not a Penthouse. It was proximity to the Emir’s court.

It was wearing indigo dyed seven times until it shone like oil. It was owning a brass bowl from the trans-Saharan trade. It was speaking Hausa with Arabic loanwords because you traded with North Africa.

In Benin, status was bronze. The Queen Mother’s beads. The palace guilds who cast heads of rulers with a precision that still embarrasses European museums.

In Ife, status was terracotta and later bronze too. Naturalism so precise you can see the scar on a king’s cheek from 800 years ago.

No one was trying to look like Dubai.

They were trying to look like themselves, but more so.

THE INTELLIGENCE OF LAYOUT

Walk these cities now and you will still feel it.

Kano is quarters. The dyers’ quarter smells like iron and plant. The leather workers’ quarter sounds like hammers. Everyone has a job and a place.

Zaria is grids of knowledge. The emir’s palace, the market, the madrasa. Close enough to walk.

Benin’s palace was the center of a radial city. Roads moved out like spokes. Power had geometry.

This was urban planning without AutoCAD.

Decided by water, by trade routes, by where the gods were said to live.

Compare that to Lagos today, where two towers go up and the road forgets to follow.

NOSTALGIA IS A MODERN PROJECT

Young Nigerians are not nostalgic for these cities. Most have never been.

They are nostalgic for the idea of them.

For a time when "Nigerian" did not mean "trying to catch up." When we were already exporters. Of cloth, of bronze, of law, of philosophy.

This is why there is a sudden interest.

Art collectors asking for Benin bronzes back. Designers referencing Zaria embroidery. Architects sketching Kano gates in glass.

It is not about the past. It is about correcting the timeline.

To say: we were not waiting for skyscrapers to begin.

WHAT REMAINS

The walls in Kano are still standing. Cracked, but standing.

The Oba’s palace in Benin still sits where it sat. Smaller now, quieter.

The Ooni in Ife still performs rites that predate Nigeria by centuries.

They are not museums. They are working cities.

With WhatsApp. With generators. With boys selling recharge cards at gates that were built for camels.

That is the tension. And the beauty.

Stand at Kofar Nassarawa at dusk.

The mud is the color of tea. The sky turns the same color.

A woman walks through with a tray of fura on her head. A motorcycle passes. A child recites Quran.

No one is taking pictures.

The city does not need to be seen to be real.

It was here before the idea of Nigeria.

The question is whether Nigeria will remember how to be like it.
