The Ikorodu High Court has approved three foreign laboratories to conduct DNA testing to determine the paternity of Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Mohbad.

At the resumed hearing of the paternity case involving the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, and the widow, Wunmi, the court selected two laboratories in the United Kingdom and one in the United States to carry out the tests.

The decision, according to counsel representing Mohbad’s father, was mutually structured to ensure fairness and transparency — with one laboratory nominated by each party and a third chosen independently by the court.

Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 27, 2023, a passing that triggered national grief and intense public scrutiny.

Since then, questions surrounding the paternity of his son have fueled family tensions and widespread debate on social media.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, counsel to Mr. Aloba disclosed that the matter has been adjourned to April 7 for a report on the picking of samples.

He explained that arrangements would be made with welfare officers to supervise and monitor the collection process, ensuring that all parties are present when samples are taken.

“The court has eventually picked three DNA laboratory centers, two in the UK and one in the US. One from us, one from them, and the court picked an independent one,” the lawyer said, adding that representatives of the Aloba family and the legal team would be present at each center where testing is conducted.

Mr. Aloba has previously insisted that his late son’s remains should not be laid to rest permanently until a DNA test is completed to clarify Liam’s paternity — a stance that has drawn mixed reactions from the public.

For many Nigerians who followed Mohbad’s career and mourned his sudden death, the court’s decision signals a significant step toward resolving a deeply emotional and highly publicized family dispute.

Beyond the legal arguments, the case remains a poignant reminder of how unresolved questions can prolong grief for families already navigating loss under the glare of public attention.
