Publisher and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has described as an “empty boast” a statement by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, regarding the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

Wike had said he would have travelled to Osun to help secure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu had wanted the party to win the election at all costs.

Reacting during an interview on News Central Television on Wednesday night, August 19, Momodu dismissed Wike’s claim, arguing that his influence could not surpass that of the Senate President and several governors who had campaigned in Osun but failed to deliver the state to the APC.

Momodu described Wike’s comment as unfortunate and urged Nigerians to pay attention to the minister’s remarks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I think it was a very unusual, uncommon and unfortunate statement for a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to make, but nothing is beyond our friend, Wike, the FCT Minister,” he said.

He added that Wike would not have changed the outcome of the Osun election even if he had been present.

“When I listened to him, I had to respond instantly because I knew that was an empty boast. If he had been in Osun, he would not have achieved anything,” Momodu stated.

The ADC chieftain also argued that Wike was not more influential than the Senate President and governors who campaigned for the APC in the state.

He recalled the failure of members of the former G-5 governors to secure senatorial victories in their respective states during the last election, using the development to argue that governors do not possess unlimited political influence.

“Wike would have to divide himself into 36 states plus Abuja for him to perform the kind of magic he thinks he can perform,” Momodu added.
