Every year on June 12, Nigeria pauses to mark Democracy Day. Government officials release statements. Politicians speak about freedom and progress. Ceremonies are held. Speeches are made. Citizens are reminded that democracy was fought for, defended, and eventually restored after years of military rule.

But beyond the public holidays and official speeches, many Nigerians are beginning to ask a difficult question:

What exactly are we celebrating?

For some citizens, June 12 no longer feels like a day of victory. It feels more like a day of reflection, frustration, and unanswered questions. The words “Happy Democracy Day” have become increasingly uncomfortable for many people to say sincerely because democracy, in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians, often feels distant from its promises.

People ask themselves:

Are we truly free?

Do citizens genuinely have a voice?

Is democracy working for the average Nigerian?

Or have elections simply replaced military uniforms while the struggles of the people remain the same?

To understand why these questions matter so deeply today, Nigeria must first remember what June 12 represents.

June 12 is not just another public holiday. It is one of the most symbolic dates in Nigeria’s political history. It represents sacrifice, resistance, and the demand for the people’s right to choose their leaders. The date became historic because of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election Nigeria had ever conducted.

That election was believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola. Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines voted massively, showing rare unity during a period of political tension and military control. It was one of the few moments in Nigeria’s history where people genuinely believed that the nation could rise above division and choose competence, hope, and democratic progress.

But that hope was crushed.

The election was annulled by the military government under General Ibrahim Babangida, throwing the country into chaos, protests, political unrest, and national disappointment. What followed was years of instability, repression, arrests, and resistance movements demanding the restoration of democracy.

Many Nigerians lost their freedom during that struggle.

Some lost their lives.

Others lost years of peace and stability.

June 12 therefore became more than a political date. It became a symbol of the Nigerian people’s insistence that power should belong to citizens, not dictators.

In 1999, Nigeria eventually returned to civilian rule after years of military governments. Since then, the country has remained under democratic leadership for over two decades. On paper, that alone is considered progress. Nigeria now conducts elections regularly. Citizens can criticize leaders publicly. Political parties campaign openly. Governments change constitutionally rather than through coups.

But while democracy returned institutionally, many Nigerians argue that its spirit has not fully reached the people.

Today, millions of citizens are struggling with hunger, unemployment, insecurity, inflation, poor healthcare, unstable electricity, corruption, and declining trust in public institutions. In many communities, people no longer judge democracy by constitutions or election calendars. They judge it by whether life is becoming better or worse.

And for many ordinary Nigerians, life has become harder.

Nigeria fought military rule because citizens wanted freedom, accountability, justice, and opportunity. Yet decades later, many people still feel unheard. Elections happen, but citizens often feel disconnected from governance after campaigns end. Leaders emerge, but public confidence in institutions continues to weaken.

This is why Democracy Day in 2026 feels emotionally different for many Nigerians.

Across social media, radio conversations, markets, campuses, and communities, there is a growing sense of democratic fatigue. Citizens are not necessarily rejecting democracy itself. Rather, many are questioning the version of democracy they currently experience.

Because democracy is supposed to mean more than voting every four years.

Democracy is supposed to mean accountability.

It is supposed to mean institutions that protect citizens.

It is supposed to mean leaders who listen.

It is supposed to mean justice that works regardless of status.

It is supposed to mean that the people feel represented, respected, and protected.

When citizens cannot afford food comfortably, they question democracy.

When insecurity spreads across communities, they question democracy.

When corruption scandals repeat endlessly without consequences, they question democracy.

When young people lose hope in the system, they question democracy.

And perhaps most painfully, when citizens begin to feel powerless in their own country, they begin to wonder whether democracy truly belongs to them anymore.

It must continually justify itself through governance, fairness, opportunity, and public trust.

And this is where the challenge lies today.

Many Nigerians still believe in the idea of Nigeria.

They still believe the country can work.

They still believe democracy is better than dictatorship.

But belief alone is no longer enough.

Citizens increasingly want evidence that democracy can improve their daily realities. They want institutions that function. They want security. They want transparency. They want leaders who remember that public office is service, not ownership.

June 12 should therefore not only remind Nigerians about the struggle against military rule. It should also remind both leaders and citizens that democracy is not a destination that was achieved in 1999 and completed forever.

Democracy is a responsibility.

It is a process.

It is a constant struggle to ensure that power truly serves the people.

And perhaps that is the uncomfortable truth surrounding Democracy Day in 2026.

Nigeria has democracy.

But many Nigerians are still waiting to feel it.
