Your NIN Is Not for Sale – Protect It Like You Would Your Life

Fellow Nigerians, our digital identity is under attack — and the danger isn’t just from the usual suspects. It’s coming from within. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has raised serious alarm over a disturbing trend: Nigerians selling their National Identification Numbers (NINs) for as little as ₦1,500. And guess what? That same data is being resold to faceless FinTech companies for up to ₦5,000.

We are literally trading our security for peanuts.

According to the EFCC, over 2,000 Nigerians have already fallen victim to this data scam. Young Nigerians — yes, our own — are reportedly going around offering quick cash in exchange for personal data, and then flipping it for profit. In this economy, we understand desperation — but not at the expense of national integrity and individual safety.

In a bold statement from Abuja, NIMC’s Dr. Kayode Adegoke called it what it is:

“A serious security concern with grave consequences for the NIN holders.”

Let’s be clear, brothers and sisters: your NIN is your digital fingerprint. Handing it over carelessly is like giving a stranger your ATM PIN, BVN, or house key — and then hoping nothing bad happens.

This is not just about fraud. It’s about your future.

NIMC has made it clear: they will not take responsibility for any misuse of your NIN if you give it out willingly or for “financial inducement.” And rightfully so. We must stop compromising ourselves for short-term gain.

So, what should you do?

NEVER share your NIN with unauthorised individuals or shady agents.
DOWNLOAD the NINAuth App on your device via iOS or Google Play Store to manage and protect your identity.
SERVICE PROVIDERS must verify all NINs before giving access to services — no shortcuts, no excuses.
TREAT YOUR NIN like your ATM PIN. Guard it. Always.

Digital identity protection is a shared responsibility. If we want to build a stronger Nigeria, we must begin by valuing the things that secure our identity and future.
