Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration in Ekiti State has commenced issuance of licenses to producers of table water and owners of private borehole for commercial use as part of efforts to monitor and ensure safe drinking water for people in the State.

Speaking during the distribution of certificates of registration to successful applicants under the aegis of the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), the State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko reiterated the commitment of the State Government to ensuring access to clean, safe, and dependable water stressing that the focus is to prevent waterborne infections and diseases.

Aluko said only producers of table water that meet the regulatory compliance standards and pass the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Program are registered, emphasizing that “Safe drinking water supply involves several essential principles, including water purification and treatment while water purification methods such as filtration, disinfection, and chemical treatment remove contaminants, making water safe for consumption”.

He enjoined licensed distributors of table water to sustain their hygienic environment and adhere with global best practices, stressing the importance of regularly updating themselves with developments in water production technology to enhance the credibility and reputation of their businesses.

The Commissioner warned that officials of the Ekiti Water and Sanitation Regulatory Agency (EK-WASRA) and the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) would constantly be on ground to ensure strict adherence for the safety of the people.

In his remarks, the General Manager of EK-WASRA, Engr. Ayodele Osalade explained that the target of his agency is to regulate and ensure that only safe bottled and sachet water are produced, circulated, sold and drink in the State.

Engr. Osalade promised to enforce acceptable standard with the aim of protecting public health adding that there would be no sacred cow as all relevant operatives have been duly briefed and there would be thorough synergy with the Standard Organization of Nigeria to achieve the desired goals.
