Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have criticised Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, following widespread flooding that submerged several parts of Abuja after a heavy downpour.

Videos circulating on social media showed parts of Wuse 2, including Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, the bridge near City Park, a plaza and several vehicles submerged in floodwater.

Other affected areas reportedly included Wuse Zone 1, Katampe, Durumi, Gwarinpa, Gaduwa and Gudu, leaving some residents and motorists stranded until the water receded.

The flooding has triggered criticism on social media, with some residents accusing the FCT administration of failing to properly maintain Abuja’s drainage system and protect the city’s original master plan.

One X user, Chude, expressed concern over the increasing frequency of flooding in areas that were previously considered less vulnerable.

“Abuja is sinking. The planned capital of Nigeria, one of three purpose-built capitals in West Africa and the newest there, was never meant to flood,” he wrote.

He alleged that blocked drainages, narrowed canals and the conversion of green areas for estate development had contributed to the worsening situation.

Another user, Everest, also blamed the current administration, while Mohammed Jummal described the flooding as unusually severe and called for urgent action.

“This is worrying and deserves urgent attention,” he wrote.

Theo Abu Agada similarly accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration of contributing to the problem, particularly through the alleged conversion of Abuja’s green areas for development.

The latest flooding has renewed concerns over drainage infrastructure, urban development and flood management in the nation’s capital.
