Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles captain, Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman”, was on Saturday laid to rest in his hometown, Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chukwu, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 74, was honoured with nearly 10 days of tributes and ceremonies across Lagos and Enugu before his final burial.

Speaking at the funeral, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described Chukwu as a man whose simplicity, humility, and discipline inspired everyone he met. He assured the family that the state government would stand by them and ensure the late coach is immortalised.

“As a government, we will always honour him, for indeed he served and loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart. Let us be comforted by the remarkable legacies he left behind,” Mbah said.

In his sermon, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, hailed Chukwu as a “strong man” who led the Rangers and the Super Eagles to many victories and also lived as a devoted family man. He recalled that Chukwu was honoured with a national award in 1980 after leading Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations triumph and was later celebrated with the African Football Legend Award in 2012.

On behalf of the family, Chukwu’s son, Chukwuemeka Jr, thanked friends, dignitaries, and supporters who came to pay their last respects.

Born in Enugu, Chukwu is remembered as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders. He captained Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, guiding Nigeria to continental glory in 1980, before going on to manage both sides with the same dedication and humility that defined his playing career.

Among those who attended the burial were former presidential candidate Peter Obi, Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau (represented by NNL Chairman George Aluo), Senator Victor Umeh, former Archbishop of Enugu Diocese Emmanuel Chukwuma, ex-Rangers stars, and other dignitaries.
