In its largest military parade in a decade, South Korea will demonstrate its military strength on the streets of Seoul while displaying a staggering variety of weapons and apparatus.

This unusual display of force, which covered a 2-kilometer route through the center of the city’s busy commercial sector, marked a change from South Korea’s customarily somber celebration of Armed Forces Day.

On Tuesday, over 340 pieces of military equipment, including tanks, self-propelled artillery, attack planes, and drones, will be shown in front of about 7,000 soldiers.

This parade unfolds against the backdrop of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s more assertive stance towards North Korea, which has conducted a flurry of prohibited weapons tests, claimed the launch of a “nuclear-attack” submarine, and attempted to deploy a military spy satellite into orbit.

President Yoon has issued a stern warning of an “overwhelming response” that could spell the end of North Korea’s regime if it were to employ nuclear weapons.

In detail, the parade, commencing at Seongnam, will feature a striking lineup that includes the Hyunmoo missiles, L-SAM missile interceptors, F-35 jets, and the KF-21, South Korea’s first domestically developed fighter aircraft.

The Hyunmoo missile is a pivotal element of Seoul’s strategy for addressing North Korean threats, while the L-SAM is tailored to intercept incoming missiles at altitudes ranging from 50 to 60 kilometers.

Moreover, this event will feature a joint flyover by military aircraft from South Korea and the United States, spotlighting their “upgraded” defense capabilities.

The Eighth Army, under US Forces Korea, will have more than 300 combat troops participating in the parade, underscoring the enduring 70-year alliance between the two nations.
