The Council of Elders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has raised the alarm over what it described as ceaseless unprovoked attacks in many parts of Igbo land, citing the case in Enugu State as a clear invasion by yet to be identified gunmen.

The Council is worried that while innocent Igbos had been killed with their houses destroyed, razed or property looted, many especially in the border communities with Benue and Kogi states had fled their homes and homeless.

Chairman of the Council, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, raised the concern while briefing newsmen in Owerri during which he requested Ebonyi Governor Dave Umahi and President General – Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide – Professor George Obiozor to urgently convene a meeting of Southeast religious, traditional and business leaders to find lasting solution to the worrisome development.

He said: “The Igbos are all over the country and are law abiding, doing their legitimate businesses, paying their taxes and making contributions to the development of their host communities but if any of them commits an offence, he should be arrested and tried in accordance with the provisions of the law.

“We will not fold our arms and allow our people to be killed by blood thirsty individuals under any guise because an attack on any Igbo man anywhere is an attack on all Igbo.”

While commiserating with the victims of the attack, he appealed to the Federal Government to take steps to stop the violation of the rights of the Igbo people.
