The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 14 associations out of 171 applicants seeking recognition as political parties.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, following the Commission’s meeting on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Olumekun explained that the decision came after INEC reviewed preparations for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections, the end-of-tenure FCT Area Council polls, as well as fresh applications from political associations.

According to the Commission, the 14 groups satisfied the preliminary conditions stipulated in Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and the 2022 INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

The remaining 157 applications were rejected for not meeting the required standards, with INEC assuring that the affected groups will receive formal notifications within 24 hours.

The names of the shortlisted associations have already been published on INEC’s website and other official channels. Their interim chairmen and secretaries are scheduled to attend a briefing at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

INEC further noted that physical verification of the claims made by the shortlisted groups will be conducted before any final decision is taken on their registration as political parties.
