dent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties and aspirants against engaging in early campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that such actions violate provisions of the Electoral Act.

INEC’s warning came through the Chief Press Secretary to the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, in a statement issued on Monday. He emphasized that the Commission has yet to release the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls.

Oyekanmi’s caution follows increasing concerns over the appearance of campaign posters, subtle endorsements, and rising political rhetoric across the country—indicators many see as early signs of electioneering.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections,” Oyekanmi stated. “Therefore, party primaries have not been conducted, and no political party has officially nominated candidates for the upcoming general election.”

He referenced Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which states that public campaigning is only permitted 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before voting begins.

Additionally, he cited Section 95(1) of the Act, which requires that campaigns be carried out in accordance with INEC regulations.

“While Nigerians are free to discuss politics and express their opinions on future elections, open campaigning or vote canvassing for the 2027 elections at this stage is not only inappropriate but also constitutes a clear breach of the Electoral Act,” he said.

Oyekanmi further revealed that the Commission had recently addressed this issue during its last quarterly consultative meeting with political parties and expects full adherence going forward.
