The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged Governor Uba Sani to take responsibility for the $350 million World Bank loan he supported during his time as a senator, rather than blaming former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for the state’s N6.7 billion monthly debt deductions.

The party made its position known in a statement issued by its state chairman, Sir Edward Percy Masha, following comments by Governor Sani during an interview on Channels Television.

Masha said while the PDP acknowledged the governor’s disclosure of the state’s monthly debt burden, it rejected any attempt to shift responsibility or rewrite the history surrounding the loan.

According to him, Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the Senate and chaired the Senate Committee on Banking, played a key role in the 9th Senate’s approval of the $350 million World Bank loan for Kaduna State in March 2020, after the 8th Senate had rejected it.

Masha recalled that Sani had defended the loan and expressed confidence in the El-Rufai administration’s ability to use the funds responsibly, even asking to be held accountable if the former governor failed to do so.

The PDP chairman argued that Sani could not publicly support and defend the loan at the time and later distance himself from the financial burden arising from its repayment.

“Governor Uba Sani cannot lead the campaign for a loan, publicly defend it, ask to be held responsible for its prudent utilisation, and then, years later, present the resulting repayment burden as though he had no role in the process,” Masha said.

He urged the governor to explain how his administration plans to manage the N6.7 billion monthly deductions, protect essential services and ease the pressure on the state’s finances.

The PDP called on Sani to focus less on blaming the previous administration and more on providing practical solutions to Kaduna’s debt challenges.

The party maintained that public records cannot be erased and that responsibility cannot simply be transferred because circumstances have changed.
