Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has accepted an offer by a Nigerian, Nnaemeka Ikerionwu, to pay the N25,000 fine imposed on the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over an alleged violation of airport parking regulations.

The development follows Keyamo’s earlier directive giving Obi seven days to publicly apologise to airport authorities and pay the fine for allegedly breaching parking rules at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The controversy began after Obi, during a viral podcast interview, alleged that his vehicle was clamped at the airport while other vehicles parked in the same area were ignored. He cited the incident as part of what he described as a pattern of harassment against him and his associates, claiming it reflected growing political intimidation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In response, Keyamo rejected Obi’s claims and released CCTV footage, which he said showed the former Anambra State governor violating the airport’s parking regulations.

The incident sparked widespread reactions, with Obi’s supporters accusing the Federal Government of politically targeting the opposition figure.

Amid the controversy, Ikerionwu wrote a letter apologising to the minister and volunteered to settle the N25,000 fine on Obi’s behalf.

Responding to the offer, Keyamo directed him to meet with the Director of Commercial and Business Development of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to complete the payment process.

The minister also took a swipe at Obi, saying the release of the CCTV footage had exposed what he described as a false narrative.

“Now that we have burst his bubble, next time, @PeterObi should think twice before making outlandish claims of being targeted at our airports or anywhere else in order to get ‘sympathy votes’.

“Nigerians have become too politically savvy to fall for such cheap political gimmicks from presidential candidates that emerged from miracle centres,” Keyamo said.
