The police command in Lagos State on Sunday said it investigated 55 murder cases between June and August in the state.

Twenty-two of the murder cases were incidents in June, while twenty were recorded in July, and thirteen others were recorded in August. However, no murder suspect was arrested.

The commissioner of Police Abiodun Alabi disclosed this during an interactive session with crime correspondents in Lagos on the heels of 231 days in office giving his scorecards to Lagosians.

While highlighting major achievements under his Command in the last 231 days as 37th Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Alabi said 37 robbery operations were foiled in different parts of the state, 32 different arms and 78 ammunition abandoned in vehicles by suspects were recovered during the same period.

A breakdown of the foiled robbery operation revealed that eighteen robbery operations were foiled in June, ten in July, and eight in August.

Meanwhile, 35 armed robbery suspects were arrested within this period, while 13 other suspected armed robbers were killed in different parts of the state during encounters with the police, while eight armed robbery incidents occurred in the state within the period in review.

Giving a review, CP Alabi said from June 22nd to August 22, 2022, 15 suspects were arrested for cultism while 5 cultism cases were recorded. Twelve cultists were arrested in June, three in July, and none were arrested in August.

The state recorded 8 attempted cases of suicide. Four of the attempted suicide cases were in June, three in July, and one in August.

The police also recovered 32 arms and 78 ammunitions.

The Command also recovered 6 vehicles; four among them were removed from parks while one was snatched.

Three policemen were attacked in the state under the period reviewed.

CP Alabi used the opportunity to warn that under no circumstance should any civilian offer money to police either to secure bail or facilitate the performance of an officer’s responsibility.

The police boss who reiterated the age-long declaration that ‘bail is free, reminded the public that anyone who offered a bribe to the police was as guilty as the police officer who received the bribe.

“Nigerians like to buy their freedom because they have committed an offence. I wonder why a man would want to waste money bribing police to secure his freedom if he has not committed a crime,” The CP said.

The commissioner commended the commitment of officers and men of tactical units like the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Intelligence Response Team, IRT, Anti-cultism, and others.

He however warned the bad elements in the various squads to desist from demanding and collecting money from members of the public who came to them with crime-related problems.

He said information of some operatives demanding huge sums has reached him from members of the public who came to lodge one complaint or the other.

CP Alabi said that on such occasions, he disciplined such erring officers, adding that he would henceforth deal ruthlessly with any officer or rank and file caught indulging in such anti-service activities.

He commended crime reporters who helped him attain his modest achievements since he assumed office in the state seven months ago.
