Chelsea have named Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The move marks a return to Stamford Bridge for the club legend who previously managed Chelsea from July 2019 until he was sacked in January 2021.

He will be in charge for Saturday’s game against Wolves whille the Blues carry out an “exhaustive process” to find a permanent manager since former boss Graham Potter was recently relived of his duties at the Bridge.

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali told the club’s official website: “We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge.

“Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club.

As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.

“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.

“We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week.

“We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games.”

On his part, Lampard said he will “focus on the job in hand” and not get ahead of himself.

“I want to do the best possible role I can and after that we will see what happens,” the 44-year-old said.

“I am not getting anywhere ahead of myself.”

When asked if he could follow the path of Roberto di Matteo who led the club to Champions League glory as a caretaker coach before earning the job on a full-time basis, the former midfielder said: “It won’t be my decision so again I don’t want to jump forward to that.

“I understand I will get asked that question a lot. I have my eyes wide open.

“The important thing for me is to park that and focus on the job in hand.”

Chelsea sit in 11th position in the Premier League, 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season.
