The Federal Government has officially issued a legal notice announcing the full enforcement of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to secure its digital space.

What the Cybercrimes Act Covers

The Cybercrimes Act provides a comprehensive legal framework for preventing and punishing offences committed through electronic and digital means. It criminalises:

Internet fraud (including “Yahoo Yahoo” activities)

Identity theft and impersonation

Cyberstalking and online harassment

Hacking and unauthorised system access

Distribution of fake news or incitement via digital platforms

Possession or distribution of child pornography

Ransomware and extortion through digital channels

It also empowers law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest, and prosecute offenders, and allows for the freezing of bank accounts and confiscation of digital assets linked to cybercrime.

Stiff Penalties for Violators

Under the Act, offenders may face substantial fines and prison sentences, depending on the severity of the crime. The law also mandates stricter regulations for internet service providers, telecommunications companies, banks, and cybercafés, requiring them to retain user data and comply with investigation requests.

Security agencies have been directed to begin immediate enforcement, with special cybercrime units already deployed across key regions.

Public Advised to Be Cautious Online

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has issued a public warning, reminding citizens that “ignorance of the law is not an excuse.”

“All Nigerians must be mindful of their online actions. Every post, message, or digital transaction is now subject to legal scrutiny,” a senior official said.
