In the heart of Lagos, where the lagoon meets the hustle of Africa’s largest city, a community once known for resilience and ingenuity is now at the centre of one of Nigeria’s most painful civic confrontations. Makoko, the iconic waterfront settlement long described as “Africa’s Venice” has been thrust into the national spotlight once again, not for its cultural richness, but for demolition, displacement and deep public unease.

For decades, Makoko’s homes built on stilts over the water have symbolised both the challenges and the tenacity of urban life in Nigeria. But in early 2026, far more than symbolism was at stake. Bulldozers, excavators and armed officers moved in, dismantling hundreds of homes and forcing thousands of residents into uncertainty, boats and open spaces with little warning and few alternatives.

The official reason given for the actions has been safety and environmental concern. Government officials say many of the structures were built dangerously close to high-tension power lines and in areas that posed grave risk of fires or other disasters. Lagos State spokespeople have emphasised that clearing unsafe structures is part of a broader safety and redevelopment policy aimed at protecting lives and modernising the city. They argue this is consistent with similar safety measures carried out in other vulnerable parts of Lagos.

There is also talk of a future-looking plan, a Makoko Water City project, envisioned as an innovative redevelopment of the waterfront with modern infrastructure and sustainable design. Officials say millions have already been committed, with more funding sought from international partners.

But development, in theory, does not automatically translate into justice or well-being in practice and this is where the human cost becomes most visible.

International and local reporting on the demolitions makes one thing clear: the speed and scale of the operation have left many residents shocked, displaced, and without clear options. In some cases, families forced from their stilt houses found themselves sleeping in canoes or open spaces after their property was razed. One young family with five-month-old twins may have ended up living in a canoe because they had nowhere else to go.

Estimates suggest that thousands of homes were destroyed, and over 10,000 people displaced by these operations, numbers that stagger the conscience when one thinks of children, elderly relatives, traders and fishermen uprooted from the only community many have ever known.

These impacts go beyond shelter. Makoko’s residents depend on fishing, informal trade and community networks for survival. When their homes are demolished, their livelihoods are broken. When shops and schools are dismantled, children lose routine and opportunity. When boats not just homes are taken or destroyed, food security is threatened and future income becomes uncertain.

Unsurprisingly, Makoko’s residents and advocacy groups raised their voices in protest. Peaceful demonstrations sought accountability, compensation, alternative housing and respect for court orders. In one notable instance, the Lagos State House of Assembly ordered an immediate halt to demolition activities so that authorities and community representatives could review the situation together.

But those protests have not been without tension. Security forces used teargas to disperse demonstrators, and at least one person was reported injured, highlighting the thin line between public order and public protection.

Human rights organisations, both national and international, have described the demolitions as untenable and potentially unlawful, warning that it risks severe humanitarian consequences if not addressed with resettlement plans and respect for constitutional protections. Some legal experts have even underscored that forced evictions without adequate notice or relocation support may be against existing Supreme Court rulings.

A Broader Debate: Progress or Erasure?

Makoko’s situation is not happening in isolation. It sits at the crossroads of two powerful themes in Nigeria’s development story:

One: the urgent need to ensure public safety, sanitation, and order in rapidly growing cities;

Two: the challenge of ensuring that development does not trample on the rights, dignity, and humanity of vulnerable communities.

For many Nigerians watching from outside Makoko, the debate has become moral as well as procedural. Some argue that unsafe structures and environmental degradation must be addressed. Others insist that residents deserve a plan, compensation, relocation, community input and respect not just sudden clearance. There are fears that unless these are addressed, Makoko will become another example of urban poor people being pushed aside for real-estate interests or redevelopment schemes that benefit outsiders more than the families who built lives there.

Online discourse reflects this tension, with some voices arguing for improved planning and relocation rather than demolition, and others warning against sentimentalism that ignores real structural risks.

Makoko’s current crisis confronts us with some very Nigerian questions:

1. Can progress and human dignity walk hand in hand?

2. Must the development of cities always mean displacement of communities who have little else?

3. How do we protect vulnerable citizens while also ensuring safety and orderly growth?

These are not easy questions. They require listening, empathy, dialogue and agreement that every Nigerian, no matter where they live deserves respect, protection, and a plan that honours both community and nation.

The story unfolding in Makoko is not simply one of water and stilt houses. It is the story of a community that has survived centuries, nurtured families, raised children and contributed to the life of Lagos as a whole. If development takes place without people, it becomes little more than displacement.
