When people speak about the history of Nigeria, the story often begins with October 1, 1960, the day the country became independent from British colonial rule. But Nigeria did not begin in 1960. In fact, the territory now called Nigeria had centuries of history before the word “Nigeria” was ever used as the name of a country.

Long before colonial boundaries were drawn, the land was home to sophisticated societies, kingdoms, empires, city states, trading communities and decentralised societies. People farmed, traded, manufactured goods, practised different religions, built political institutions, fought wars, established diplomatic relationships and developed cultures that would later become part of what we now call Nigeria.

Understanding this history matters because modern Nigeria was created by bringing together many different societies that already had their own histories and identities. The country that emerged from colonial rule was therefore not a blank slate. It inherited the institutions, divisions, cultures, languages, economies and political arrangements that had developed over centuries.

The story of Nigeria is, in many ways, the story of how these different peoples were brought into one political space and have continued to negotiate what it means to belong to one nation.

Before the Colonial State

There was no single precolonial Nigeria. Different parts of the territory had different political systems and historical experiences.

In the northeast, Kanem and later Bornu developed into powerful states around the Lake Chad region. Their history stretched back many centuries, and their influence extended across territories that today include parts of Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Islamic scholarship, long distance trade and political administration became important features of the region.

Further west and north were the Hausa states, including Kano, Katsina, Zaria, Gobir, Kebbi and others. These states developed sophisticated systems of government and became important centres of commerce and scholarship. Kano, in particular, became a major commercial centre connecting West Africa to wider trans Saharan trading networks.

The nineteenth century brought another major political transformation with the rise of the Sokoto Caliphate following the jihad led by Usman dan Fodio. A large political and religious system emerged across much of what is now northern Nigeria and neighbouring territories. Emirs governed different emirates within the caliphate, while Islamic scholarship and trade flourished.

In the southwest, the Yoruba region had its own complex political history. Oyo developed into a powerful empire whose influence extended across large parts of the region. Ife held enormous cultural and spiritual significance, while other Yoruba political centres developed their own institutions and traditions.

The Benin Kingdom, centred in what is now Edo State, was another major civilisation. The kingdom developed a sophisticated political structure under the Oba and became famous for its artistic traditions, particularly its bronze and brass works. Benin also maintained diplomatic and commercial relationships with Europeans long before the British colonial state was established.

In the southeast, political organisation often looked very different. Many Igbo communities were organised through village assemblies, councils of elders, age grades, titled societies and other institutions rather than a single centralised monarchy. Authority could be distributed across different levels of society.

Along the Niger Delta and coastal areas, communities developed around trade, fishing, agriculture and commerce. Some became important intermediaries in the trade between inland societies and European merchants.

This diversity is important because it challenges the idea that Nigeria had one political system before colonialism. There were kingdoms, empires, emirates, city states and decentralised communities, each with different ways of organising authority.

There was also extensive trade across these societies. Agricultural products, leather, textiles, salt, kola nuts, metals and other commodities moved across regions. The trans Saharan trade connected northern communities to North Africa, while coastal trade connected communities in the south to European merchants.

European contact therefore did not suddenly begin with colonial conquest. Europeans had been trading along parts of the Nigerian coast for centuries. The nature of that relationship changed significantly over time, particularly with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade and later the expansion of European commercial and political interests.

The Coming of British Colonial Rule

The nineteenth century transformed the relationship between European powers and African societies.

Britain increasingly sought political and economic control over territories along the West African coast. Lagos was formally ceded to the British Crown in 1861 and became a Crown Colony the following year. The British gradually expanded their influence into other areas through treaties, military campaigns, commercial companies and administrative arrangements. (The Library of Congress)

The Royal Niger Company became an important instrument of British commercial expansion in the interior. Eventually, the British government took direct control of the company’s territories in 1900.

British expansion was not always peaceful. There was resistance in different parts of the territory, and British forces used military power to defeat societies that resisted their authority.

The conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate and northern territories brought large areas under British control. In the south, British expansion also encountered resistance, including the military campaign against Benin in 1897.

The British then developed different methods of governing the territories they had conquered.

One of the most important was indirect rule.

Under indirect rule, British authorities governed through existing traditional institutions where they considered them useful. Emirs and other traditional rulers could retain authority, but their powers were increasingly placed within the colonial administrative structure.

This system was particularly developed in northern Nigeria under Lord Frederick Lugard.

It was not implemented in exactly the same way everywhere. In some areas, the British encountered centralised systems that could be incorporated into colonial administration. In other areas, particularly parts of southeastern Nigeria where political authority was more decentralised, the British attempted to create or appoint local authorities to perform administrative functions.

This produced serious consequences…

The colonial authorities were not simply governing existing societies. They were also reshaping them.

The Amalgamation of 1914

Perhaps the most consequential administrative decision in Nigeria’s colonial history came in 1914.

The British merged the Northern Nigeria Protectorate and Southern Nigeria into one administrative entity.

This was the birth of modern Nigeria as a single colonial state.

But it is important to understand what amalgamation meant.

It was not an independence agreement between Nigerian peoples deciding that they wanted to become one country. It was a British administrative decision made within the context of colonial rule.

The different regions had distinct histories, economic systems and political institutions. Bringing them under one administration created a political structure that would eventually become the country inherited by Nigerian nationalists.

The colonial state also introduced a common administrative framework, English as an official language, new legal structures and a modern bureaucracy. At the same time, colonial economic policy largely focused on extracting and exporting raw materials and agricultural commodities.

Cocoa became important in the southwest. Groundnuts and other agricultural products became important in the north. Palm products became important in the southeast. Later, petroleum would transform the country’s economy.

The colonial economy connected different parts of the country to global markets, but it was largely structured around Britain’s economic interests.

Education, Religion and the Growth of a New Nigerian Elite

Christian missionary organisations played a major role in education, particularly in southern Nigeria. Schools produced teachers, clerks, lawyers, journalists and other members of an emerging educated class.

In the north, the development of Western education followed a different trajectory, partly because of the strength of Islamic institutions and the colonial administration’s approach to the region.

These differences would later influence Nigerian politics.

A new generation of educated Nigerians began questioning colonial rule and demanding greater political participation.

Newspapers became powerful instruments of political consciousness. Newspapers and intellectuals began debating issues of representation, racial discrimination, economic exploitation and self government.

Nigerians were increasingly asking a question that would eventually become unavoidable: if Africans were capable of governing their own communities, why should they remain subjects of a foreign government?

Resistance Was Not Always Political

Resistance to colonialism did not always take the form of political parties or independence movements.

There were tax protests, labour strikes, women’s movements, religious resistance and local rebellions.

The Aba Women’s War of 1929, for example, demonstrated that colonial policies could provoke organised resistance from ordinary people. Women in southeastern Nigeria protested against taxation, colonial administration and the warrant chief system.

Such movements showed that resistance to colonial rule was not limited to educated men in urban centres. Ordinary Nigerians, including women and workers, also challenged colonial policies.

The Rise of Nationalism

Following the Second World War, political consciousness expanded rapidly.

Nigerians increasingly demanded constitutional reform and greater self government. Political organisations emerged and became more influential.

Among the most important political figures of the period were Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello.

They did not always agree.

This is important.

The struggle for independence was not a single movement in which every Nigerian political leader wanted the same thing. There were disagreements about the pace of independence, federalism, regional autonomy, economic policy and the distribution of political power.

The regional nature of Nigerian politics became increasingly important.

The Northern Peoples Congress became particularly influential in the north under leaders including Ahmadu Bello. The Action Group became dominant in the west under Obafemi Awolowo, while the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, associated with Nnamdi Azikiwe, became influential particularly in the east.

These parties reflected not only ideological differences but also regional political interests.

The question of how to build one Nigeria while accommodating its enormous diversity was already becoming one of the country’s central political challenges.

The Constitutional Road to Independence

Britain gradually introduced constitutional reforms.

The 1946 Richards Constitution established regional legislative structures. Further reforms followed in the 1950s, increasing Nigerian participation in government and strengthening the federal character of the emerging political system. Nigeria’s leaders increasingly took control of regional governments while the British retained ultimate authority at the centre.

By the late 1950s, the question was no longer whether Nigeria would become independent. The question was when and under what political arrangement.

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria became independent.

Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became the country’s first Prime Minister, while Nnamdi Azikiwe became Governor General and later, after Nigeria became a republic in 1963, its first President.

Nigeria inherited a parliamentary system based largely on the British model. The Prime Minister was head of government, while the Governor General, and later President, served as head of state.

The new nation was enormous, diverse and full of possibility.

But independence also came with difficult questions.

How would different ethnic and regional groups share power?

How would wealth be distributed?

Would regional interests remain stronger than national interests?

How would the country develop its economy?

Could a political system inherited from colonial rule successfully govern such a complex society?

These questions did not disappear with independence.

In many ways, they became the defining questions of the decades that followed.

Nigeria had gained political independence, but the work of building a nation had only begun.

And the first attempt would not last very long.

The country entered independence with hope, ambition and enormous potential. It also entered it with regional political competition, constitutional weaknesses, economic inequalities and unresolved questions about national identity.

Within six years, the young republic would experience its first military coup.

Within seven years, it would enter a devastating civil war.

The military would soon become the dominant force in Nigerian politics.

The Nigeria that emerged from colonialism was therefore only the beginning of the story.
