Nigerian celebrities, including actors, singers, comedians and media personalities, have taken to social media to mourn the death of veteran actor Olu Jacobs.

Jacobs, one of the most respected figures in Nigeria’s film and theatre industry, died at the age of 84 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and entertainers, who described him as a legend, mentor and major influence on generations of actors and filmmakers.

Actor Stanley Ontop described Jacobs’ death as a “Black Wednesday in Nollywood,” saying he woke up in tears after hearing the news.

“Keep resting in the bosom of thy Lord, legendary Old Jacobs. You made my childhood memorable. I woke up this morning with tears in my eyes. Chai chai, this one pain me. Black Wednesday in Nollywood,” he wrote.

Veteran actor Richard Mofe Damijo, popularly known as RMD, said Jacobs was an icon and pioneer whose talent, discipline and professionalism helped shape the Nigerian film industry.

“To many, he was an icon. A pioneer. A giant of Nigerian theatre and film. A man whose talent, discipline and extraordinary command of his craft helped shape the industry we know today. To me, he was Uncle Jay,” RMD wrote.

Actress Mercy Johnson also remembered Jacobs for the special moments they shared on set, describing him as more than a veteran but a legend whose guidance and influence became part of her journey.

“Rest on Legend. Rest well, Uncle Olu. I could never forget our moments on set, truly precious memories, filled with so much laughter, joy, and, of course, plenty of corrections,” she wrote.

Funke Akindele described Jacobs as a kind and gracious man who supported and encouraged young talents.

“Rest in peace uncle!! A true legend, a kind and gracious man who was always willing to support, encourage and uplift young talents. Your remarkable legacy and contribution to our industry will never be forgotten,” she wrote.

She also sent her condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the entire Jacobs family.

Veteran actor Yemi Solade paid tribute to Jacobs as the “Lion of Lufodo,” celebrating his contribution to the creative industry.

“Goodnight LION Of LUFODO. I celebrate a creative life of monstrous impacts. Uncle Olu J. Sleep on in the creative firmament,” Solade wrote.

The President of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Mr Latin, described Jacobs as “a true legend, an icon, and a master of his craft.”

He said the late actor’s impact on Nigerian theatre and film would remain unforgettable.

Actor Muyiwa Ademola described Jacobs as “a name that became an institution” and praised his influence on generations of actors and filmmakers.

“You did not merely act, you taught us what acting could be,” Ademola wrote, adding that Jacobs’ legacy would continue to live on in Nigerian and African theatre and film.

Skit maker Mr Macaroni described Jacobs as a “Legend, Icon and an absolute Inspiration to us all,” while Broda Shaggi prayed for the late actor’s soul to find eternal rest.

Actress Empress Njamah described Jacobs’ death as the end of an era, saying the veteran had taken “an eternal bow from life’s theatre.”

Desmond Elliot also mourned Jacobs, writing, “Papa has gone home. All we can say is THANK YOU SIR. You made the whole of Africa proud. May God be with your family and loved ones.”

Other celebrities who paid tribute to the late actor include Madam Saje, Mo Abudu, Toyosi Adesanya, Mike Ezuruonye, Emeka Rollas, Susan Peters, Evan Okoro, Daniel Etim Effiong, Abey Lanre, Mr Jolof, Agatha Amata and Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

Pastor Femi Lazarus, Banky W, Dare Justified, Deyemi Okanlawon, influencer Enioluwa and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo were also among those who expressed their condolences and celebrated Jacobs’ legacy.
