has urged the Federal Government to end the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists and other violent criminals, insisting that those found guilty of terrorism should be prosecuted and punished in line with the law.

The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary as lawmakers considered a motion on the rising cases of attacks, kidnappings, and killings involving serving and retired military personnel across the country.

The motion, sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, called for stronger measures to tackle insecurity and restore public confidence in the justice system.

Lawmakers argued that the current security challenges require tougher deterrents rather than policies that could be seen as encouraging impunity. They stressed that anyone convicted of terrorism or related crimes should face immediate prosecution.

The additional resolution followed a motion by Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central, which was seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

The Senate also resolved to seek an audience with President Bola Tinubu to present its concerns over the worsening security situation and the growing fears of Nigerians over terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.

The motion was prompted by the recent abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who was kidnapped alongside his wife in Katsina State and later died in captivity.

While presenting the motion, Senator Yar’Adua highlighted a series of attacks targeting serving and retired military officers, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to national security.

He recalled the January 2023 abduction of retired Colonel Rabiu Garba Yandoto and his two children in Zamfara State, as well as the 2023 kidnapping and killing of retired Major General Richard Chukwudi Duru in Imo State, despite the payment of a $50,000 ransom by his family.
