ld student from Ekiti State, Adeolu Oluwadamilola Ooreofe, has emerged winner of the 2026 African Spelling Bee (Junior Category), defeating contestants from over 20 African countries at the grand finale held in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Adeolu’s victory marks a historic achievement for Ekiti State and Nigeria, as the young scholar demonstrated exceptional brilliance, composure and mastery of words to clinch the coveted continental title.

Her triumph comes on the heels of a consistent record of outstanding performances in spelling competitions. She placed second in the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, came second in the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, finished fifth at the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and secured second position in the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee.

In the 2026 competition cycle, Adeolu began her journey by dominating the Ekiti State qualifiers before advancing to the national level in Port Harcourt, where she again finished second. She subsequently proceeded to the continental stage, where she outclassed her peers to emerge champion.

The student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado Ekiti, was widely praised for her poise, sharp intellect and unwavering focus throughout the competition.

As part of her reward, she received a $5,000 educational scholarship and will represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee scheduled to hold in China later this year.

Stakeholders have described her victory as a testament to the growing standard of education in Ekiti State, noting that it reflects sustained investment in academic excellence and youth development.

Her achievement has also been hailed as a source of pride for the state and the nation, with commendations extended to her family and teachers for their roles in nurturing her talent.
