In Nigeria today, political debates are no longer limited to town halls, newspapers, or television studios. Much of the nation’s political conversation now happens online on social media platforms where millions of Nigerians speak, argue, defend, and sometimes attack.

Recently, a number of viral videos and posts circulating on Facebook and other platforms have sparked a fresh debate. The discussion centers on a familiar question in Nigerian politics: Should leaders be openly criticized, or should citizens rally behind them in loyalty?

Many of the comments under these posts reflect frustration from ordinary Nigerians who feel that criticism of government policies is increasingly being labelled as hostility or disloyalty. Some commenters argue that online supporters sometimes called “data boys” or “data girls”, quickly move to shut down dissenting voices whenever the president or government policies are questioned.

For these citizens, the issue is not about disrespect. It is about accountability. In a democratic society, they argue, leaders must remain open to scrutiny because criticism is one of the ways citizens ensure that government decisions serve the public good.

Others see the situation differently. Supporters of the current administration believe that constant criticism especially on social media can sometimes ignore the complexities of governance. They argue that leaders deserve time and support to implement policies without being constantly attacked or undermined.

This divide reflects a larger tension within Nigeria’s democracy.

On one side are citizens who believe democracy thrives when people freely question authority. On the other side are those who believe unity behind elected leadership is necessary for national stability.

But history offers an important reminder: democracy is built on both participation and accountability.

Leaders are elected through the votes of citizens, which means they hold a legitimate mandate to govern. Yet that mandate does not remove the public’s right to question decisions that affect their lives. In fact, democratic leadership expects that citizens will ask questions, challenge policies, and demand better outcomes.

The danger arises when disagreement becomes hostility. Social media has amplified political voices, but it has also intensified polarization. Discussions that should be about ideas often turn into personal attacks, accusations of betrayal, or blind defence of political figures.

Nigeria’s democracy cannot grow in an atmosphere where people feel afraid to speak or where every criticism is treated as sabotage.

At the same time, criticism must remain responsible and constructive. Democracy benefits from informed debate, not misinformation or deliberate attempts to inflame tensions.

Ultimately, the real strength of a nation lies in its ability to balance both values: respect for leadership and the freedom to question power.

As Nigeria continues navigating difficult economic and political realities, citizens will keep speaking sometimes in support, sometimes in frustration, sometimes in hope.

The challenge is not to silence these voices, but to ensure that they contribute to a healthier democratic conversation.

Because in the end, a democracy where citizens cannot speak freely is fragile but a democracy where dialogue remains respectful and focused on solutions can become stronger with every debate.
