The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will hold a nationwide protest on December 17 to draw attention to the worsening security situation across the country.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Lagos. The document was signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah.

According to the communiqué, the NEC reviewed several urgent national and industrial matters, with particular focus on the recent abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State. The body condemned the kidnapping and the killing of a school employee during the incident, expressing shock that security personnel had allegedly been withdrawn from the school shortly before the attack.

Describing the rising wave of school attacks as “deeply troubling,” the NEC urged the Federal Government to prioritise the protection of educational institutions, especially those located in high-risk and rural communities.

To press its demands, the NLC resolved to mobilise all its affiliates and state councils for the December 17 protest. It also called for a thorough investigation into the Kebbi incident and the prosecution of individuals responsible for the security breaches.

The communiqué noted that the meeting also addressed other national concerns, including the persistent crisis in the tertiary education sector, the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), and efforts to revive the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO).

Additionally, the NEC expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the Labour Party, urging members to restore the party’s alignment with working-class values, core labour ideology, and integrity.

It warned that failure by the Federal Government to act swiftly on insecurity and other unresolved issues could trigger widespread industrial action across key sectors such as health and education.

The communiqué reiterated that the safety and welfare of workers remain at the forefront of the NLC’s advocacy and called on Nigerians to join workers in demanding a secure and just society.
