The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Kano State on Monday expressed confidence that the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP will be rejected by the people of Kano in the 2027 elections due to the ongoing political crisis in the state.

The APC’s statement came in response to an earlier claim by Kano NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, who suggested that the Kano emirate crisis would hinder President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

In a rebuttal on Monday, Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas argued that it is the NNPP that will face the consequences of the crisis in 2027.

Abbas stated, “Aside from the widely acknowledged poor performance of Governor Abba Yusuf-led NNPP government in Kano State in the past year, the party’s penchant for causing and sponsoring crisis in a peaceful state he inherited and some of his anti-people’s policies are factors voters will consider in the next election.”

He criticized the NNPP’s focus on the contentious emirate law instead of development projects, saying, “It is public knowledge that while other state governors were inaugurating one project or another to mark their first anniversary in office, the NNPP Kano State government was busy distracting the good people of Kano from his obvious failures.”

Abbas further highlighted the impact of the NNPP’s policies on the people of Kano, stating, “The people of Kano State whose houses were demolished and rendered homeless will not forget in a hurry, the people of Kano State whose sources of economic survival and businesses were destroyed will not vote NNPP again.”

He also accused the NNPP of diverting attention from their failures by attacking the President, suggesting that this indicates the party’s lack of confidence ahead of the 2027 election.

“Kwankwaso got 1,454,649 total votes in the last presidential poll, representing only 6.23 percent, and most of them were from Kano. How come Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the opposition Labour Party from far away South-East, bested Kwankwaso in 13 northern states?”

Abbas concluded by revealing that bringing up the 2027 presidential election is a diversionary tactic by the NNPP to cover up for their government’s inadequacies and to plunder the state’s resources in the name of candidature.

Kano has been mired in crisis since May 24, 2024, when Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

This move followed the repeal of the 2019 Kano Emirate Law, which resulted in the removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, along with the emirs of Bichi, Karaye, Rano, and Gaya.

These five emirs, installed in 2020 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, have contested their removal, turning the matter into a legal issue.

Currently, Ado Bayero occupies the mini palace at Nasarawa, while Sanusi resides in the main palace in Kano. Court verdicts are awaited to resolve the dispute.
