Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, has rescued a 15-year-old girl suspected to be a victim of trafficking and apprehended a suspect in Kwali Area Council, Abuja.

According to a statement issued on April 17 by the command’s spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, investigations revealed that the teenager, who is from Ebonyi State, was abducted, abused, and allegedly being prepared for trafficking outside the country.

The case came to light after a report was filed at the Kwali Central Divisional office regarding the sudden disappearance of the girl, who lived with her mother. Following the report, the Command’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit launched a swift operation that led to the arrest of the suspect after tracking him down.

Preliminary findings identified the suspect as Anyanwu Daniel, 46, from Imo State. He was alleged to have held the victim captive for two weeks and subjected her to abuse without her consent.

Further interrogation reportedly uncovered plans to traffic the minor to Libya for child labour before the operation was foiled.

Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, said the arrest highlights the Corps’ commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children, from exploitation.

He noted that perpetrators of such crimes often prey on unsuspecting victims for personal and financial gain, adding that the Corps remains determined to dismantle networks involved in human trafficking.

Odumosu also called on the public to stay alert and report suspicious movements or activities, stressing that community cooperation is essential in tackling trafficking and related crimes.

The suspect and the rescued victim have since been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
