Beyond the familiar theatre of campaign promises, defections, accusations and counter-accusations, the August 15 Osun governorship election is increasingly assuming a significance far greater than the battle for the Government House in Osogbo.

It is becoming a test of whether Nigeria’s political class has learnt anything from the painful history of electoral violence in the old Western Region, and whether the country’s democratic institutions can withstand the pressure of desperate politicians determined to win at all costs.

That is the central concern raised by political analyst, Dr. Chris Akinfosile (FNISM), who has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against allowing the election to become a credibility test for his administration.

Akinfosile’s warning could hardly have come at a more critical moment.

With barely days to the poll, the political temperature in Osun has risen sharply, with allegations of intimidation, inflammatory statements, security concerns and accusations of electoral manipulation dominating the political space.

The controversy was further amplified by music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, who threatened to seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if he believed the election had been rigged.

For Akinfosile, however, the bigger issue is not whether a Nigerian musician would seek foreign intervention.

The real question, he argues, is whether Nigeria itself will demonstrate that its electoral institutions are strong enough to protect the ballot without external pressure.

In his commentary titled, “The Osun Tinderbox: As Davido Threatens Trump’s Intervention, President Tinubu Must Shun Election Rigging and Save Nigeria’s Fragile Democracy,” Akinfosile warned that manipulating the election could produce consequences far beyond the immediate political contest.

“There is no patriotic argument for rigging an election in a democracy already precariously balanced on a knife edge,” he stated.

That warning deserves attention.

Nigeria has been here before.

The old Western Region remains one of the country's most enduring reminders of what happens when political competition degenerates into violence, bitterness and institutional breakdown.

The lesson from that history is not that elections should be feared.

Rather, it is that elections must be allowed to remain elections.

The ballot must not become a battlefield, and political disagreement must not become a licence for violence.

That is why the allegations and counter-allegations emerging from Osun should not be dismissed as ordinary campaign-season rhetoric.

The controversy surrounding Senator Francis Fadahunsi’s viral comments has added another troubling dimension to the contest.

Fadahunsi was captured in a video making a statement that was widely interpreted as a call for violence against members of the Accord Party.

Governor Ademola Adeleke subsequently called on the Inspector-General of Police to arrest and investigate the senator, describing the alleged statement as a national security concern.

But Fadahunsi has since clarified his remarks, insisting that he was referring to defeating political opponents with votes rather than physically attacking them.

“I did not say they should be killed,” he said in a Channels Television interview.

“What I told them was to use their votes. I said, ‘I will kill them with my vote. We will kill them with our vote.’”

That clarification is important, but so too is the larger lesson: political leaders must understand the power and danger of their words.

In an election as tense as Osun's, language matters.

A careless statement from an ordinary supporter is troubling. From a serving senator, it is considerably more consequential.

Political leaders have the influence to calm their followers or inflame them. They can either lower the temperature or pour petrol on an already heated political environment, that responsibility cannot be outsourced.

For Governor Ademola Adeleke, the election is fundamentally a referendum on his record.

Speaking during an Arise TV governorship town hall in Osogbo, the governor pointed to what he described as major achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture and security.

He cited about 350 kilometres of roads constructed, with another 160 kilometres under construction, as well as the rehabilitation of about 200 healthcare centres.

“When I came in, I went around all our health centres. I said this is not acceptable. As of today, we have fixed about 200 healthcare centres,” he said.

He also pointed to the procurement of 31 tractors and agricultural inputs, as well as the recruitment and training of more than 1,500 personnel for Amotekun.

Adeleke's argument is simple: voters should judge him by what they can see.

“Our work speaks for itself,” he declared.

His opponents, naturally, see things differently.

The APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, is asking voters to look beyond the incumbent's record and consider what he describes as the need for a new direction.

Oyebamiji’s promise of change

Oyebamiji has framed his campaign around economic revival, agriculture, education, healthcare, jobs and human capital development.

“Governance is about people. It is not about segments. It is not about an area. It is not about a city or a town. It is the entirety and the entire people of Osun that I want to serve,” he said.

His promise to “banish hunger and poverty” speaks directly to the economic anxieties of ordinary Nigerians.

With his background in banking and public administration, Oyebamiji has also sought to present himself as a technocrat capable of attracting investment and managing Osun's finances.

“I will prioritise agriculture. That’s my number one,” he declared.

But campaign promises are not new to Nigerian voters.

What matters is whether those promises can survive the journey from campaign podium to government office.

That is where Osun voters hold the ultimate power.

The forgotten voices in the contest

Amid the fierce battle between the major political camps, candidates such as the Peoples Redemption Party's Dr. Rasaq Saliu have also promised reforms in agriculture, infrastructure, education, employment, security and healthcare.

Their presence is a reminder that democracy is bigger than the two dominant political camps.

Every candidate has a right to compete. Every voter has a right to hear competing ideas. And every legitimate vote deserves protection.

That is the essence of the democratic process.

The danger begins when political parties start seeing opponents not as competitors but as enemies.

Tinubu’s moment

This is where President Tinubu's role becomes particularly important.

Akinfosile believes the President has an opportunity to demonstrate that national interest can rise above party calculations.

He cited Tinubu's intervention in the controversy surrounding the freezing of the Osun State Government's account as evidence that the President can act when he believes the national interest demands it.

Tinubu directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to take steps to vacate the court order freezing the state government's account and subsequently spoke with Adeleke.

Akinfosile argues that the same principle should apply to the election.

The President, he said, should ensure that security agencies remain neutral, voters are protected and electoral materials are secured.

He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to demonstrate institutional independence and ensure that every legitimate vote counts.

That is not an unreasonable demand.

Indeed, it should be the minimum expectation of every Nigerian election.

A credible election does not mean everyone will be happy with the result. Someone must win. Someone must lose.

What gives democracy legitimacy is not that every contestant emerges victorious, but that the loser can accept defeat because the process was credible. That distinction is crucial.

The real winner must be Osun

The August 15 election should therefore not become a contest between political egos.

It should be a contest of ideas, records and competence. Adeleke should be judged on his achievements and failures.

Oyebamiji should be judged on his promises, experience and capacity.

Saliu and other candidates should equally be judged on their programmes. But none should be judged through violence.

The people of Osun should not be forced to choose between their political preference and their safety.

Security agencies should not become instruments of intimidation.

Political thugs should not determine who votes. And election officials must not become merchants of political favour.

As Akinfosile put it: “Let the people choose. Let their will stand.”

That may sound simple, but it captures the entire purpose of an election. For President Tinubu, Osun presents an opportunity.

He can allow the election to become another chapter in Nigeria's long history of disputed polls and political bitterness.

Or he can help ensure that the election becomes a demonstration that Nigeria's democracy, despite its many imperfections, is capable of correcting itself.

The choice is ultimately bigger than Osun. It is about what kind of country Nigeria wants to become. A country where political power is obtained at all costs?

Or one where the ballot is stronger than the bullet, where institutions are stronger than individuals and where the will of the people remains sovereign?

Akinfosile believes Tinubu can choose the latter. “Tinubu can choose to be remembered as the President who placed nation over party, stability over power and posterity over expediency,” he stated.

That is perhaps the most important question confronting Osun as voters prepare to decide. Not simply who wins, but how the winner wins.

Because when the votes are counted and the political fireworks have faded, Osun will still have to live with the consequences. And Nigeria will still be watching.
