Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a senior All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Osun State, has cautioned critics and opposition members against making reckless statements about Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday in Osogbo, Oyintiloye described disparaging remarks against the country and its leadership as unpatriotic. He stressed that such comments, particularly by high-profile figures both at home and abroad, are tarnishing Nigeria’s international image.

While acknowledging the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech, the former lawmaker emphasized that this right should not be used as a license to make uncultured or unsubstantiated attacks on the nation or its leaders.

“Criticism is welcome, but it must be conveyed with civility and decorum. Unguided and baseless allegations against President Tinubu’s administration are negatively impacting Nigeria’s global reputation,” he said.

Oyintiloye noted that although Nigeria faces challenges, the government is actively addressing them. He warned that Nigerians abroad who use political discourse to disparage the country risk causing more harm than good, noting that such remarks may be remembered and turned against them in the future.

He urged citizens to emulate the patriotic spirit seen in other countries, highlighting the American habit of saying “God Bless America” regardless of circumstances. “We must desist from denigrating our country and its leadership. Negative rhetoric benefits no one, but with prayers and collective effort, we will overcome our challenges,” Oyintiloye added.

The APC chieftain also expressed concern that some Nigerians living overseas face investigations, harassment, and humiliation due to damaging statements made by individuals intent on undermining Nigeria’s image.

He concluded by calling on critics to prioritize national interest over political rivalry, expressing confidence that Nigeria will eventually overcome its challenges. “Sooner or later, we will all be proud to be called Nigerians anywhere in the world,” Oyintiloye said.
