The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have accused President Bola Tinubu of insincerity in addressing Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

Both opposition parties, in separate statements issued in Calabar on Thursday, strongly opposed the idea of creating state police, warning that it would undermine democracy, weaken opposition voices, and further entrench the powers of governors.

Chairman of PDP in Cross River State, Vena Ikem, questioned the rationale behind the move, describing it as a recipe for disaster:

“If we want to destroy the little we have left of democracy, then let us go ahead with state police. This will spell doom for the Republic. We tested it with state electoral commissions, and it has proven to be a total disaster.”

Ikem also recalled the president’s failed attempt to enforce local government autonomy, lamenting that governors continue to frustrate efforts to strengthen grassroots governance.

Similarly, Dr. Effiong Nyong, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, accused the Tinubu administration of lacking sincerity and political will on security.

The ADC noted that while Tinubu was a vocal critic of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity, his government has gone largely silent despite the situation worsening under the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2015.

Nyong further argued that Tinubu’s decision to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police signaled a lack of seriousness in reforming security structures.

He added that despite record allocations to states following the removal of fuel subsidy, insecurity has persisted:

“Government is quick to lament lack of funds, yet even with the windfall from subsidy removal, insecurity continues to escalate. It is either the government is not interested or lacks the will to tackle the matter.”

Both parties urged the president to focus on genuine reforms and concrete action, rather than what they described as “cosmetic solutions” that could plunge the nation deeper into crisis.
