A prominent member of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has expressed serious concern over the growing insecurity across Nigeria, accusing the country’s leaders of remaining silent while citizens and security personnel continue to lose their lives.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, the former Anambra State governor said the country appears to be under siege as violent attacks continue to spread across different states.

Obi cited a recent incident in Ngoshe community in Borno State, where terrorists reportedly overpowered soldiers, killing both security personnel and civilians and abducting more than 100 women and children. He said the scale of insecurity in the country has become alarming.

The former presidential candidate also criticised the way fallen soldiers are often treated, noting that many who died defending the nation are not given the honour and recognition they deserve.

Obi further pointed to worsening security situations in states such as Nasarawa State, Kogi State and Benue State, where many residents have reportedly fled their homes as terrorists take control of farmlands and forests. In the Kadarko area of Nasarawa State alone, he said more than 14,000 people have been registered as internally displaced persons.

He also referenced attacks in Oyo State, Ondo State and Kebbi State, where travellers and residents were reportedly abducted or killed. Obi warned that the security crisis is no longer limited to rural communities, noting that even the nation’s capital, Abuja, has recently witnessed attacks, including a reported kidnapping incident in Kubwa.

He criticised the government for what he described as a lack of adequate response to the worsening situation, insisting that the primary duty of any government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. Obi also accused the political class of focusing more on electoral ambitions rather than addressing the country’s security challenges.

According to him, Nigerians deserve responsible leadership that prioritises safety, welfare and the restoration of peace across the country.
