Police in the United Kingdom have identified a 16-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty at a lake in Lincoln as Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, popularly known as Tomiwa.

According to a statement issued by Lincolnshire Police on Friday, officers received a distress call at about 5:48 p.m. on July 9 reporting concerns for the safety of a teenager at Swanholme Lakes.

Emergency responders, including Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the East Midlands Ambulance Service, rushed to the scene and rescued the teenager from the water.

Although Tomiwa initially responded to treatment at the scene, he later died in hospital at about 8:50 p.m. with his parents by his side.

Police said a file would be submitted to the coroner as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a tribute released through Lincolnshire Police, Tomiwa’s parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, described their son as “a vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose presence illuminated every space he entered.”

“His laughter, warmth and joyful spirit touched countless lives,” they said.

The family described Tomiwa as the eldest of four brothers, saying he was a caring protector and a constant source of encouragement to his siblings.

“His younger brothers adored him and he cared for them with tenderness, always making them smile and supporting them in every way,” the statement read.

Tomiwa was also remembered as a talented footballer who played for Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC, as well as an active member of his church’s youth ministry.

His parents said he was known for his kindness, compassion and ability to make friends wherever he went.

“Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion. Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful,” they said.

“He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him. Tomiwa will forever remain in our hearts.”

Lincolnshire Police noted that Tomiwa is the second teenager to lose his life at Swanholme Lakes this summer. On May 24, 15-year-old Declan Sawyer also died after encountering difficulties in the water at the nature reserve.
